In Memory of Paul Stanyard

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our President, Paul Stanyard, on Sunday following a long illness.

Although Paul served as President of Carlton Cricket Club for only a few months, he was the natural and fitting successor to his great friend and mentor, Grahame Liles. His association with Carlton spanned decades, and there is no doubt that he has been one of the most influential figures in the Club’s history since joining in the early 1960s.

Paul was Carlton through and through – from his earliest days to the end. Raised in Stanley and educated at Rothwell Grammar School, he demonstrated his passion for cricket early on, organising matches and teams on the school’s dedicated cricket ground. That enthusiasm never left him.

He began his senior playing career at Oulton before joining Carlton, where he played alongside fellow Club legend Keith Taylor. Paul’s arrival at Town Street was a turning point for the Club, and it marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to its growth and success.

Professionally, Paul had a distinguished career in education, serving for many years at Royds School. His leadership in the PE and Sports Department, particularly in rugby and cricket, impacted the lives of hundreds of students. Under his guidance, Royds became a fertile ground for emerging cricketers, many of whom would go on to represent Carlton, Oulton and Methley.

On the field, Paul was a formidable pace bowler and a shrewd tactician. In the later stages of his playing days, he transitioned to spin bowling with great success. His cricketing intelligence was unmatched – he had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game, local clubs and players, and a remarkable ability to outthink the opposition.

Beyond his contributions as a player, Paul dedicated himself fully to Carlton Cricket Club in a variety of roles: club umpire, joint treasurer, committee member, fundraiser, Chairman and ultimately, President. His leadership extended far beyond the pitch – he was a pillar of the Club’s development, especially in the nurturing and coaching of young cricketers. Generations of players were introduced to the game through Paul’s passion and dedication, particularly in junior cricket, where his tireless efforts left a lasting legacy.

While his achievements on the field including multiple Leeds League titles and Hepworth and Wood Cup triumphs – were significant, perhaps his greatest legacy lies in the inspiration, guidance, and mentorship he provided to so many over the years.

We honour and remember Paul as a true Carlton legend, whose monumental contribution to the Club will never be forgotten.

Our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences go to Diane, David and all of Paul’s family and loved ones.
