Carlton Cup Kings
Carlton Cricket Club, situated in the heart of Wakefield’s Rhubarb Triangle is celebrating cup glory with their talented under 13 team. In the club’s first season in the Heavy Woollen Junior League and following excellent league performances the Carlton boys have added the Gordon Cooper Cup to their trophy cabinet.
Ably captained by George Domaille the team saw off stiff competition from Morley and Wakefield Thornes in the early rounds. The semi final against New Farnley was a closesly contested, tense, encounter with Ben James dominating the Farnley attack and setting up a platform for a late run chase. Matthew Cooke, James Cunliffe and Jordan Sowden, requiring 18 from the final 4 overs, took up the challenge and were able to keep cool heads and steer Carlton home with two balls to spare. Carlton’s superior strength in depth, teamwork and fielding skills played a huge part in securing their place in the final.
Carlton dominated the final against Liversedge winning by 9 wickets in a solid all-round display. Quality line and length bowling restricted the opposing batsmen and scoring opportunities were hard to come by. Carlton’s outstanding fielding put unwanted pressure on the entire Liversedge batting line up and this led to the unusual occurrence of five run outs in the innings. Carlton’s top three batsmen had little difficulty in scoring the 45 runs required and did so with seven overs to spare. Wicketkeeper and opening bat, Elliot Munnelly, was deservedly awarded the player of the match trophy.
The game was played in an excellent spirit and Liversedge can only reflect upon a day when they failed to produce the excellent form they have shown so far this season.
Carlton’s Under 13`s now go on to represent the Heavy Woollen League in the final stages of the County Competition.
