Batting first, last season's runners up, Carlton Athletic were soon off to a brisk start against 2007 cup winners, Dave Burke's XI Chris Young led the way with a quick fire 25, that included some fierce hitting, as the Carlton openers raced to 50 in just 5 overs. Outstanding support came from the middle order and the footballers were able to close on 107 for 4, quite a formidable total in their allotted ten 8 ball overs.
In reply Dave's team were soon in trouble. They had to contend with some outstanding fielding and bowling and soon crumbled under pressure as wickets fell at regular intervals.
A hint of professionalism was in evidence throughout the proceedings as coach, John Flynn, was able to guide the footballers to a convincing victory by 49 runs with some meticulous planning and astute tactics. It was evident for all to see the reason why the Carlton football team have enjoyed so much success over the past few seasons!
So it's back to the drawing board for Dave and perhaps a review of his recruiting policy for next year's competition.
