Going Up!

IMG_2337OK so the cricket on the day was a bit of an anti climax with one of the shortest games ever played at Carlton CC. The Carlton opening pair of Jonathan Rudge (6 for 11) and Gary O'Neill (4 for 25) skittling out the Wakefield Thornes A side for 37 in 14.3 overs which included 14 extras! Matty Williamson and Phil Page then took just 5.3 overs to reach the required target. Phil's 30 not out took him to 1021 runs for the season with 971 coming in the League from 18 appearances, a fantastic individual performance.

The 2nd XI then returned to the club triumphant after their final day 6 point demolition of Scholes A with Darren Read (50) and Gary Close (88) collecting most of the 179 runs for 9. Darren Read then topped that off with 3 for 9 bowling figures on the day and Michael Hodgkins finishing the year with a great 7 for 27.

Unfortunately the 2nd XI performance was just not quite enough to snatch the 2nd promotion place in Division 3 with Mirfield PC beating Liversedge edging them out by a single point. Then the news came in to say that Moorlands had just fallen 26 runs short of the Batley total of 215 which meant Batley were champions of Division 1 but Carlton 1st XI were still promoted to the Premier Division!

There was a fantastic atmosphere in the Club last night and it looked like everyone had a great time. Photos of the day can now be found in the Gallery here. Season stats will be available via the 2011 Season menu item from 12 September.

Promotion Chasing!

newspaperWhat an incredibly exciting last day of the season we have got at Carlton. The 2nd XI have managed to close the gap on Mirfield PC A, currently sitting in the 2nd promotion spot in Divions 3, to a single point . The Carlton 2nd XI are away to Scholes A on Saturday who are currently in 7th place and a 6 point win would really put the pressure on MPC who are away to Liversedge A who are, unfortunately for them, already relegated so only have pride to play for.

The 1st XI sit in 2nd place in Division 1, 4 points ahead of Moorlands who head to table toppers Batley and need to come away with a 6 point win to have any chance of ousting Carlton from the promotion places. Carlton require anything other than a loss or a rained off no result in their home tie against Wakefield Thornes to ensure promotion regardless of the Moorlands result, so promotion is very much in their own hands. Let's hope the Carlton attack can dispatch the in form Nipuna Senaratne early doors who hit an unbeaten 93 from 89 balls last weekend against Oulton. 1000 league runs is also still just within reach of the 1st XI captain Phil Page. Good luck to both Carlton teams!

U17 Season Summary

cricket_ballThe Carlton Under 17`s rounded off their season in fine style winning their last five games to finish in a very creditable fourth position in the Heavy Wollen League. The team improved throughout the season winning seven and losing three matches, only one game was rained off and we had to concede the away fixture at Ossett.

The team was competitive despite exams, Rugby tours, South American expeditions, proms, driving tests, work, holidays and even football in July affecting players availability. The squad coped well and many thanks must go to the players from the under 15 team who filled in admirably on many occasions. Eighteen players were used in total.

newspaperCarlton travelled to Coal Aston CC in Dronfield on Sunday and came away with a great win setting up a Semi Final game at home to Darfield on Sunday 28th August. It was also great to see the mixture of youth and experience in the team. An excellent 50 from Gary Close also topped off a high scoring weekend for him after hitting 64 the previous day. He was supported well by, amongst others, George Hulme and James Cooper.
